PROJECT THESIS

Choreographers have incorporated modern elements to their “traditional” dances to appeal to performers and audience members.

PROJECT PROCESS

Analyze "traditional" DVN 2016 performances
Send out Google Form Surveys to 2016 DVN choreographers for "traditional" dances
Conduct face-to-face interviews with 2016 DVN choreographers for "traditional" dances
Analyze results and conclusions.

We will refer to these performances as “traditional” as labelled by DVN Board and Vietnamese Student Association Board. While not claiming these dances as traditional, we will ask choreographers of their opinions of traditional and modern elements they chose.

DEM VIET NAM: VSA CULTURE SHOW

Dem Viet Nam (DVN) is the Vietnamese Student Association's (VSA) annual culture show at the University of Michigan. DVN board, which is made up of 4-5 VSA board members, creates a theme each year and implements the show production process within a few months. Each year, board members also decide which charity to donate the show's profit.

For the last two years the show had over 100 student performers, mostly non-Vietnamese students that have limited experience in dance. In its recent years, DVN has split its performances evenly between modern dances and traditional performances, which incorporate traditional clothing, props, and Vietnamese music.

Traditional dances in this year's DVN show consisted of Fan, Ribbon, Lotus, Guy-Girl Traditional (Rice hat), and Umbrella dances.
